Dutch Walls • 2002-2004 • site specific installaties • mixed media.

Dutch Walls • 2002-2004 • site specific installations • mixed media.

Dutch Walls is consisting of a series site-specific installations, multiples and photographs on the occasion of the 400 years VOC, for Noorderlicht Photo Festival 2002 (Fries Natuurmuseum, Leeuwarden), Hooghuis gallery, Arnhem and Lux in Nijmegen. The works are a combination of photographs, projections, drawings, text and cloves. The texts show original VOC discriptions of the horrific 17th century events on the Moluccan Banda islands that led to the Dutch spice monopoly in this area. In contrast it shows parts of the lyrical description of these islands by Alfred Russel Wallace in the 19th century.

The photographs and projections show details of remains of Dutch fortresses and Indonesian jungle. A strong scent of cloves dominates the exhibition spaces.
